Stand and Deliver: Olmos gives a powerful performance in this momentous drama as a hard, requesting professor who empowers his East L.A. barrio students to pass an Advanced Placement Calculus Quiz. That’s only the beginning of this tale that is based on a true story. Cast includes Edward James Olmos, Lou Diamond Phillips, Andy Garcia, Can Gotay, and Ingrid Oliu. (105 minutes, 1987)
Lars and the Real Girl: Nice film in regards to socially shocked Gosling, who buys a life sized doll and treats her as if she’s alive, to the appall of his older sibling, and brother in law, and the neighbors in their tight knit society. Luckily, an understanding physician (Clarkson) guides them in the right direction. Cast includes Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson, Kelli Gamer, and Paul Schneider. (106 minutes, 2007)
For Love of Ivy: A family desires to keep their servant, so they find her a man to keep her happy. The film is a ho-hum black romance at best. Cast includes Sidney Poitier, Abbey Lincoln, Guy Bridges, Leon Bibb, Nan, Martin, Lauri Peters, and Carroll O’Connor. (102 minutes, 1968)
The Little Theatre of Jean Renoir: A quartet of little stories in reference to human respectability and the beneficence of country living (instead of subsisting in a dehumanized city forest). Renoir’s celluloid swan song might not be amid his best, however still has much to offer. Cast includes Jeanne Moreau, Femand Sardou, Francoise Arnoul, Jean Carmet, Marguerite Cassan, and Dominique Labourier. (100 minutes, 1971)
The Guyver: All-American Armstrong, contaminated by an extraterrestrial device, finds that he is an armored superhero, an excellent thing, except that virtually everyone else in the film might turn into a frightening beast, like CIA representative Hamill, who turns into a large cockroach. Awkward clumps of humor only make the contrived plot appear even more mindless. (92 minutes, 1992)
Bootleggers: An action comedy set in 1930s Arkansas with Koslo and Fimple trying to outsmart and outdo opponent moon shining family when running their booze to Memphis. Cast includes Paul Koslo, Dennis Fimple, Thin Pickens, and Jaclyn Smith. (101 minutes, 1974)
Rambling Rose: An evocative story set in 1930s Georgia, with Dem as an oversexed senseless gal who comes to work for a ladylike family headed by Duvall and Ladd. Vibrant, pleasantly detailed, and well performed, with numerous delightful surprises during the voyage. Cast includes Laura Dem, Robert Duvall, Diane Ladd, Lukas Haas, John Heard, Kevin Conway, Robert J. Burke, Lisa Jakub, and Evan Lockwood. (112 minutes, 1991)
Prophecy: A classical musician and her physician spouse quarrel over what appears to be gigantic salami in upstate Maine after mercury turns animals into large mutants and worse. A ludicrous terror film that is excellent for a few chuckles. Cast includes Talia Shire, Robert Foxworth, Armand Assante, Richard Dysart, and Victoria Racimo. (95 minutes, 1979)
Slaughter in San Francisco: Prior cop Wong desires retribution on killer of his companion. Norris, in an aiding role, is the poor guy. Cast includes Don Wong, Ditch Norris, Sylvia Channing, Robert Jones, and Dan Ivan. (87 minutes, 1981)
